GEO vs. SEO: what actually changes

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) gets described as "SEO for AI," which is close enough to be useful and misleading enough to cause severe tactical missteps. Here is what actually changes when optimizing for generative answer surfaces.

The goal is the same. The surface is fundamentally different.

Both disciplines want the same outcome: be found, be represented accurately, and be chosen by high-intent buyers. Traditional SEO optimizes for being clicked on a ranked list of blue links. GEO optimizes for being correctly included — and factually quoted — inside a synthesized answer where the user may never click an external link at all.

Keywords matter far less than structured semantic clarity

A web page stuffed with keyword variations can still rank in search results. It is far less useful to an LLM trying to extract a clean, unambiguous fact to answer a user's question. Clear, specific, declarative statements — exact return thresholds, exact material certifications, exact warranty periods wrapped in Schema.org microdata — get lifted into answers with dramatically higher fidelity than fluffy marketing prose.

Freshness decay carries a much higher business penalty

In traditional search, an outdated page slowly loses rankings over weeks or months. In Generative Engine Optimization, an outdated fact can get repeated verbatim by frontier models for a year without warning, simply because nothing forced an embedding re-index. SEO decay is gradual and visible in ranking reports; GEO decay is silent and invisible until monitored directly.

You cannot game model weights — and neither can agencies

SEO professionals have twenty years of reverse-engineered ranking factors and backlink dynamics. GEO is fundamentally different: models are trained on diverse datasets and synthesize answers dynamically. Be immediately skeptical of anyone selling "guaranteed #1 ChatGPT rankings." What works is consistent source-of-truth publishing, clean structured data, and relentless multi-model monitoring.

What carries over

Technical site hygiene, clear information architecture, authoritative domain reputation, and genuine domain expertise still matter — arguably even more now. The brands winning in GEO today are the disciplined teams that maintain rigorous accuracy across their canonical site pages.
